Math: This week, we began our final math unit! We will continue to focus on adding/subtracting through 120 as well as measurement and data analysis. This week, we began to think about time and its passage. What exactly does one minute mean? How long is a second? A minute? An hour? This concept is tricky for young children. Please support them by talking about time! Try to connect activities with how long they will take, when they take place during the day, and support your child to understand how their day unfolds. If you have one, practicing telling time to the nearest hour and half hour on an analog and a digital clock would be wonderful!
To help us understand time, we thought of ways we could use different materials for one second, one minute, and one hour. We then tried to work together to complete tasks for one minute at a time using these materials!
Admiring our work...
We had a cup full of ice. We predicted it would take an hour to melt. It took longer! We started to brainstorm ways that we could speed this process up!
Reader's Workshop: Did you know books can teach us lessons? Books are like fortune cookies! You can crack one open and a life lesson pops out! We have been working on discovering the lessons in books.
Writer's Workshop: We are series writers! This week, we are continuing to work on our series books. We have been working to include realistic details and chapters. As we discover new craft moves, we are also focusing on capitals, punctuation, and spelling as best we can.
Word Study: We are continuing to focus on two syllable (closed & V-e) words with suffixes -s, -ed, and - ing. Please continue to support your child to use their best first grade handwriting and spelling in all they write!
Second Steps /. Community Building: It was the second week of Vitality here at CCS! We explored the questions...
We had lots of wonderful ideas!
Science / Theme: Did you know the moon follows a pattern? We have added to our moon calendar and are beginning to make predictions about the moon based on our observations so far. We are also learning some of the names of the different moon phases: new moon, crescent, full moon.
Me... Jane: What a great trip to the Flynn! This book, and play, was full of lessons! Please go to See Saw to check out what lesson your child learned from Me...Jane.
From Mrs. Huestis: "This week we practiced what we've learned about library organization. We followed clues to find books that helped us unlock our "Breakout" box! Inside the box were "book bucks" that can be traded in for a free book to keep forever. It's not too soon to start collecting books for summer reading! Congratulations for cracking the library code!"
